NetBackup OpsCenter Analytics - Dashboard Redesign
design

Context

Maintaining data backups across large enterprise clusters is critical to avoiding catastrophic data loss. System administrators rely on continuous monitoring tools to keep tabs on backup success rates, hardware space, service level agreement (SLA) metrics, and system failures across thousands of backup agents worldwide. Within the Veritas portfolio, NetBackup OpsCenter Analytics served as the legacy reporting tool designed to provide this visibility, offering crucial tracking for backup jobs, storage capacity, and chargeback reporting.

Problem

The legacy user interface was rigid, heavily text-based, and built around static reports, making it incredibly difficult for administration teams to quickly spot critical failures, detect subtle performance trends, or proactively plan storage allocations. Instead of acting on predictive data, admin teams spent hours manually digging through separate monitoring views to compile health checks. The platform lacked a modern, flexible interface that could adapt to the distinct workflows of different users—such as an infrastructure engineer tracking immediate job failures versus an IT director monitoring high-level SLA compliance.

Impact

Worked on the end-to-end user experience redesign of the NetBackup OpsCenter Analytics dashboard, transforming a legacy reporting system into a modular, highly customizable monitoring platform. Shifting the interface architecture to a flexible widget-based framework, I designed a system that empowered users to personalize their dashboards with drag-and-drop metrics tailored to their specific operational roles.

By contributing to this design-driven modernization, we:

  • Drastically reduced cluster health check times by replacing text-heavy logs with high-glanceability visual status indicators.
  • Decreased backup failures through the early visual detection of capacity bottlenecks and system warnings.
  • Streamlined multi-tenant reporting workflows by creating modular widgets that automated SLA and chargeback visibility for distinct enterprise stakeholders.
